A quick thought on Pete’s Dragon (the remake)

I’m sure I’ve mentioned that I have mixed feelings about Disney doing all of these live-action remakes of their animated films. Granted, they’ve gone well so far (though I haven’t seen Cinderella, I did enjoy Maleficent very much), I can’t help but wonder if they’re taking this too far (because if you look at the list of upcoming Disney films, they’re basically remaking every animated film they’ve ever done!)

And when I saw that Pete’s Dragon was on the list of upcoming remakes…well, you could’ve knocked me over with a feather.

If you haven’t seen it, the original Pete’s Dragon was a combination live-action/animated musical released in 1977. It features the adventures of an orphan named Pete (Sean Marshall), who runs away from his abusive adopted “family” and encounters a dragon named Elliott (an animated green and purple dragon who is generally invisible to all but Pete). It’s a cute film, but (with all due respect) it wasn’t the best film Disney produced during that time, so it seems weird to me that they would remake it. However, I decided to suspend judgement, because after all, maybe it would be good.

The first teaser was released, and that seemed good, and then came the first visuals of Elliott himself….first here’s a picture of what he looks like in the original 1977 film

Now here is the preview image of Elliott from the new film

I’ve tried to be calm and rational about this but…SINCE WHEN ARE DRAGONS FURRY???? I agree with one commentator who said he looks more like a big cat then a dragon. And I’ll say it again, dragons are not furry!!!! I defy anyone to tell me where a furry dragon has appeared!!!

*deep breaths* This concludes my short rant.

I can understand the fur. It perhaps should make him look a bit friendlier, though it probably would’ve been better if they kept a dragonlike skin. But what I can’t get over is that head. That just looks really bad. In the trailer he seemed alright, but now that we get this first picture of him in full I just think it looks horrible.

That indeed is not a dragon’s head, that is not a great head, that is an awful looking head. I can’t believe that they are fine with how this looks as opposed to how the animals look in the Jungle Book. I mean, how can they not think that this animation doesn’t even come close as to what they did in that movie. I just don’t understand. (And it doesn’t even look like he’s in that forest, he just looks fake to me)
