Star Wars Rebels news: Grand Admiral Thrawn is canon again!!

So after watching the season 2 finale of Star Wars Rebels and discovering how awesome this show is, I kept my ears open for news regarding season 3. And during the Star Wars Celebration event in Europe, the creators of Star Wars Rebels dropped a bombshell regarding the new villain of the upcoming season: it will be none other than Grand Admiral Thrawn himself!!

Star Wars Rebels Season 3 Trailer

Let me explain: before the announcement of Star Wars: The Force Awakens launched a change in continuity and canon, there was a huge pile of novels set in the world of Star Wars and collectively known as the Star Wars Expanded Universe (EU for short). For several decades, these novels (which depicted life after the closing scene of Return of the Jedi) and all the characters introduced therein, were accepted as canon by the legions of Star Wars fans. One of the most popular characters was Grand Admiral Thrawn, created by author Timothy Zahn and first seen in the Thrawn trilogy of books (Heir to the Empire; Dark Force Rising; and The Last Command). Many (including myself) hoped that if the sequel trilogy of films (episodes VII-IX) were ever produced, that it would in essence be a film version of that trilogy. Then The Force Awakens was announced and everything we thought we knew was turned on its head. Within a matter of days, the EU was banished from continuity and re-branded as the “Legends” universe, meaning that officially, Grand Admiral Thrawn no longer existed.

Now however, that Grand Admiral Thrawn is appearing in Rebels and is part of the canon once more, a whole world of possibilities opens up for the character (like perhaps appearing in a live-action film down the road). Thrawn is without a doubt one of my favorite Star Wars villains: he’s a brilliant tactician; he’s the character you love to hate but at the same time you’re fascinated by how his mind works. I can’t wait to see him in season 3 of Rebels.
