On this day in Film History: xXx (2002)

xxx_ver2

On this day in film history, xXx, an action film starring Vin Diesel, was released into theaters. The film was billed on a new take on secret agent films, as the titular “xXx” (aka Xander Cage) is an extreme sports athlete turned spy after he gets into some trouble with the FBI.The NSA needs someone to infiltrate a mercenary group known as Anarchy 99 to stop them from using a biochemical weapon known only as “Silent Night” and as Xander has no previous connections to the spy business, he’s a perfect choice.

I remember seeing previews for this film, but I don’t think I ever saw it, even in part. It definitely received mixed reviews, but it did make a tidy little profit at the box office. I remember thinking it must’ve flopped when the sequel featured a different actor in the title role (that’s usually never a good sign for the health of a franchise). But some interest must have remained because there’s news that Vin Diesel is returning to the role in a new film: xXx: Return of Xander Cage (slated to be released in 2017).

Since I haven’t seen xXx, I have to ask: is it worth checking out? Will any of you be going to see Return of Xander Cage next year? I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on this film 🙂 Have a good Tuesday 🙂
