Hello everyone! I’m Becky, I am 33 years old and I have a PhD. in Musicology, specializing in film music. I think part of the reason I love movies and music so much is because being on the autistic spectrum makes it difficult at times to relate or communicate with people or certain situations, and music and movies provide that outlet, that release for me. I grew up listening to Disney soundtracks , and those songs always stuck in my head. It made me so happy when I reached graduate school and was informed that I could indeed study film music for my career.
Since I specialize in film music, this blog mostly features articles on the music in films, though I will also write about films in general, or feature composer interviews, or sometimes random film related things (I usually find a way to involve music somehow though).
Why Film Music Central? I gave my blog this name because, when I created it, I had the idea of making a hub for all information relating to film music and film composers (that’s one reason why I’m finding as many composer interviews as I can, so anyone who’s interested can come to one place and find what they need).
I hope you enjoy reading about film music, please feel free to leave comments or begin a discussion!

I’m a big fan of Eduard Artemiev, who created music for a number of Andrei Tarkovsky’s best films. Creepy and evocative; I frequently have it playing as I work (which may explain a lot)…

i love listening to film soundtracks while i work, especially Goldsmith and Horner

Really like some of Horner’s stuff (his science fiction films)…and then he did “Titanic”. Yike. One of the worst movies ever and the score didn’t help.
I prefer subtle, unobtrusive musical accompaniment–detest the way some directors (Christopher Nolan one of the worst offenders) bludgeon viewers with bombast. I would rather listen to a can opener than John Williams riffing loudly off Holst. Compare that to a film like Haneke’s “Amour”, which has barely a minute of film music (a classical piano piece) and still manages to be incredibly moving.
Good soundtracks are marvelous to work to–it might be what gives much of my writing such a “cinematic” feel.
Great to chat with you.

I admit I’m the total opposite, I do like the bombast (when it suits the picture) and Horner’s science fiction work was among his best (I’m also partial to his score for Troy in 2005). Good chatting with you too, nice to meet you.

Who are your favourite soundtrack composers?

Thank you very much! I’m so glad you are enjoying the blog. As for my favorites, I’m tempted to say I love them all equally, but if I had to pick favorites, I would say Jerry Goldsmith and James Horner are definitely at the top of my list, as is John Williams. Then there’s Hans Zimmer and I also fancy Elmer Bernstein (for his work on The Ten Commandments) and Miklos Rozsa (for Quo Vadis and Ben-Hur). Those are my favorites in a nutshell 🙂

Thanks for the follow! I saw your profile pic with the image from Metropolis and was all “Oh, I already like this guy”. Such a jaw dropping movie. Since you like sci-fi and music, I’ll admit to you that my favorite film in existence is 2001: a Space Odyssey. The use of music in that is unorthodox and phenomenal.

my pleasure, I liked the intro to your blog (the story of the well-red mage, that was epic!). I love 2001: A Space Odyssey as well, and I’ll agree, that score is definitely unorthodox 🙂

Hey thanks very much. Glad we mutually impress each other, haha! Have you written anything on 2001?

yes and no. I use the film as an example when I wrote about Temp Tracks (look under Film Music 101 and click on Film Music Terms) I haven’t written a post just on the film itself though, not yet anyways
